What Is Parts Modeling? A Guide to the Industry

When you think of modeling, you probably picture someone walking a runway or posing for a high-fashion advertising campaign. However, there is an entire side of the modeling industry dedicated to something much more specific: individual body parts.

Parts modeling is a specialized form of modeling in which a person is hired to showcase a particular part of their body, such as their hands, feet, legs, lips, or ears. These models appear in television commercials, print campaigns, product photography, and more.

You may have seen the work of a parts model countless times without realizing it.

What Types of Parts Models Are There?

Parts modeling encompasses a wide range of ages, physical characteristics, and skills, depending on the needs of each production.

Hand Models

Hand modeling is one of the most recognizable forms of parts modeling. Hand models are frequently hired to showcase fine jewelry, cosmetics, skincare products, the latest technology, food, beverages, and lifestyle products.

Beyond appearance, professional hand models must demonstrate exceptional control, patience, and the ability to collaborate closely with photographers, directors, and other production professionals. They must understand how even the slightest adjustment in hand positioning or camera angle can affect the lighting and final shot. Highly experienced hand models can also convey emotions through subtle gestures, movements, and precise timing, bringing products and scenes to life without showing their faces.

Contrary to popular belief, not every hand model needs porcelain-smooth skin, perfectly proportioned fingers, or flawless nail beds. Casting requirements vary widely depending on the product and target audience. Models with child-sized hands may be hired to demonstrate toys and children’s products, while mature hands are often sought for healthcare, medical devices, and products designed for older consumers.

Some brands specifically request heavily tattooed hands to complement an edgy or alternative aesthetic. Freckles on the hands may also be desirable for campaigns seeking a more natural, relatable appearance.

At Palm Models, we recognize that beauty comes in many forms. Every hand has its own character, and the right opportunity depends on the creative vision of each production.

Foot Models

Foot models are typically featured in footwear advertisements, nail polish campaigns, jewelry, and accessories. Depending on the project, productions may seek particular foot sizes, shapes, or skin characteristics.

Women’s US shoe sizes 6 and 9 are among the most highly requested sizes for foot modeling, particularly for footwear campaigns where models must fit specific shoe samples.

For traditional beauty and footwear campaigns, clients often prefer smooth, even-toned skin, well-defined arches, straight toes, symmetrical proportions, and neatly maintained nail beds. Visible scars, discoloration, or other distinguishing features may be less desirable for certain beauty campaigns but can be appropriate for projects with different casting requirements.

Leg Models

Leg models are frequently booked for footwear, fashion, hosiery, shaving products, skincare, and fitness campaigns. Casting requirements may include specific leg proportions, muscle definition, length, or overall appearance.

For traditional beauty and fashion advertising, clients generally seek toned, proportionate legs with smooth, even-toned skin and minimal visible scarring or discoloration.

However, not every production calls for flawless-looking legs. Healthcare and medical campaigns, for example, may specifically seek models with visible varicose veins, skin discoloration, or other conditions to accurately represent the products, treatments, or services being advertised.

Ultimately, the desired appearance depends on the purpose of the campaign.

Lip Models

Lip modeling is commonly booked for cosmetics, skincare, aesthetic procedures, and dental campaigns. Lip models may be selected for their natural shape, symmetry, fullness, or other distinctive characteristics.

For traditional beauty campaigns, clients typically prefer smooth, hydrated lips with balanced proportions, ranging from average to naturally fuller lips. Chapping, flaking, and visible scarring are generally less desirable when the focus is on showcasing lip products.

Lip models may also be booked to showcase multiple body parts, particularly their hands. For example, a lipstick advertisement may require the model to hold or apply the product while their lips remain in focus. Having well-maintained hands can therefore provide an additional advantage when pursuing lip modeling opportunities.

Ear Models

Ear models are often booked for jewelry, headphones, hearing devices, and accessories. Ear shape, size, piercings, and overall appearance can all influence casting decisions.

For jewelry and beauty campaigns, clients generally prefer balanced ear shapes, smooth skin, and well-defined earlobes without prominent scarring, tears, or deep creases.

Interestingly, having multiple ear piercings can sometimes be an advantage. Jewelry brands may specifically seek models with several lobe or cartilage piercings to showcase multiple earrings, studs, cuffs, or other accessories in a single shot.

Similar to lip modeling, ear models may also be booked for their hands. For example, a jewelry campaign may require a model to adjust an earring or showcase bracelets and rings in the same frame. Maintaining attractive, well-groomed hands can make a model more versatile for these productions.

Eye Models

Eye modeling focuses on the appearance of the eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes, and surrounding skin. Depending on the composition, nearby facial features such as the nose or ears may also be visible.

Eye models are frequently booked for mascara, eyelash extensions, lash tools, eyewear, skincare, and medical campaigns.

For traditional beauty advertising, clients often seek clear, symmetrical eyes, well-shaped eyebrows, naturally defined eyelashes, and smooth surrounding skin. Minimal under-eye darkness, visible redness, and blemishes are commonly preferred for close-up beauty shoots. Distinctive iris colors and striking eye shapes may also be desirable depending on the campaign.

However, appearance is only one aspect of eye modeling. Much like hand modeling, experienced eye models must be able to communicate through subtle movements and expressions.

With only their eyes and upper facial features visible, they may need to convey emotions ranging from excitement and happiness to relaxation, surprise, or fear. Precise control of eye movements, blinking, and facial expressions can make a significant difference in the final result.

Hair Models

Hair models are hired for beauty trade shows, live demonstrations, and advertising campaigns for shampoos, conditioners, styling products, hair tools, hair color, and accessories.

Hairstylists and brands may seek particular hair lengths, colors, textures, densities, or conditions depending on the purpose of the project.

For example, a hairstylist demonstrating a dramatic color transformation may specifically request models with previously bleached hair or noticeable root growth to showcase the before-and-after results. Other projects may require virgin hair, meaning hair that has never undergone chemical treatments such as bleaching, coloring, perming, or relaxing.

For many haircare and styling campaigns, strong, healthy hair that can withstand heat styling or chemical processing is especially desirable. However, the specific requirements vary widely.

One advantage of hair modeling is that certain bookings may have few restrictions regarding height, body measurements, age, or gender because the primary focus is the hair itself.

Body Doubles

Body doubles are hired when a production needs someone to stand in for an actor, celebrity, or another performer for specific shots or scenes.

Depending on the production, a body double may need to closely match the principal performer’s overall build, proportions, skin tone, hair color, and hair length. Physical resemblance is particularly important when the double’s appearance must remain consistent with the person being portrayed.

Age is not necessarily a deciding factor, provided the body double closely matches the required physical appearance.

Beyond resemblance, body doubles must be able to perform the specific actions and timing required for a scene. This may involve matching an actor’s movements, gestures, posture, or mannerisms.

Some productions also require specialized abilities. A body double may be hired for their proficiency in a particular sport, musical instrument, or physical activity when the principal performer does not possess the necessary skill or when a close-up requires an experienced specialist.

Who Hires Parts Models?

Parts models work across a diverse range of industries, from luxury fashion and beauty to technology, food, healthcare, and entertainment.

Luxury jewelry brands rely on close-up shots of hands, ears, and necklines to highlight watches, rings, bracelets, and earrings. Beauty companies use specialized models to demonstrate cosmetics, skincare, nail products, and other personal care items.

Technology companies hire hand models to interact with smartphones, tablets, computers, and other electronic devices. Food and beverage brands frequently use hand models to pour drinks, prepare food, open packaging, and interact naturally with their products.

Parts models are also hired for automotive advertising, lifestyle campaigns, financial services, medical productions, and entertainment projects.

In many advertisements, the product is the star. A professional parts model helps make that product look its best without distracting from it.
